Halloween and Diwali Onboard the Odyssey

October 31st

Right in the middle of three sea days, we had Halloween and Diwali celebrations.

What fun it was. The boat had been decorated by the crew with a variety of carved jack-o-lanterns, streamers, webs, and other spooky decorations.

The movies of the day were Halloween-themed; Hocus Pocus and Halloween. There was a wine tasting and even face-painting if someone needed some help with a costume.

Another resident, Paul, warned everyone that at 4:00 pm he would be trick-or-treating/drinking, and I told him I was coming too! So at four the two of us set off on a hilarious 2 1/2 hour walk around the boat causing a lot of laughter and chaos as we tried to charm our way into shots or treats.

Paul was smart and had an actual shotglass. I was a little unprepared and grabbed my mug. This was both bad and good because people often misjudged how much to pour in there, and I ended up with some large shots.

We discovered that the 4th floor is primarily vodka people, whereas the 6th and 7th were mixed flavors. We even wandered into the Diwali celebration at the Coral Lounge.

At 6:30 was dinner, and we desperately needed to eat food to help absorb some of the alcohol we had drunk.

Of course, at dinner, we met some people who wanted us to go to their doors, so we decided to go to the bathroom. I needed to reattach my fake nails that were falling off everywhere and meet up again to hit a few last doors before the Halloween party started at 8:30.

By the time the party rolled around and everyone was in costume, the merry-making was well on its way. The only repeat costume was three other pairs dressing up as two of our residents, Melody and John. They took it in great fun.

There was a contest for the best female costume, which apparently didn’t mean a female dressing up but included the men dressing as women. The best couple costume and the best male costume.

The real Melody and John.

The band was rocking, people were dancing and the party was in full swing. Sadly for me, my willingness to party was winding down and my afternoon adventures were begging me to call it a night.

Overall, it was a hilarious day, as people filled our goody bag and shot glasses all afternoon. I can’t wait for the next holiday.
